Abstract

1479431 Opening bags THURNE ENG CO Ltd 28 Nov 1975 [8 Oct 1974] 15472/74 Heading B8C A machine for providing a succession of opened bags from a stack of flattened bags 8 comprises means 1 for holding the bags 8, a suction head 16 having a rigid suction face for gripping the bags 8, means 10-14 for moving the head 16 to raise portions of the bags 8 gripped by the suction head 16 and means 22 for opening the bags 8 when gripped by the suction head 16. The stack is supported on a plate 6 with rods 2, (3), Fig. 5 (not shown), passing through holes 9 in the bags 8 for location. With suction applied preferably to two heads 16 through a spigot 17, the heads 16 are shifted on links 11, 12 to raise the upper wall of the top bag 8, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and an air jet from a nozzle 22 effects opening. The heads 16 are then released from the bag 8 by momentarily interrupting the suction, and the bag 8 is then torn from the rods 2, (3) for filling, whereupon the heads 16 are returned to the initial position to pick up a further bag 8. Each head 16 preferably comprises a hollow housing (19), Fig. 6 (not shown), with a suction face defined by a rigid sheet (21) of wire mesh.
