Abstract

1478312 Utilizing wave energy J HOLMAR 5 June 1974 [6 June 1973] 26965/73 Heading F1S Apparatus for converting the energy of sea waves into a storable form comprises a floatable winged driving member 50 adapted to be placed in contact with the sea and a fluid pump 66, 67 connected directly or indirectly to the driving member whereby when the driving member is subjected to sea waves the fluid pump delivers fluid up and down motion of the driving member 50 is transmitted via a link 65 to a piston 62. The motion of this piston is transmitted through liquid and a chain 63 to the piston 66. The reciprocating movement of the piston 66 pumps air through posts controlled by valves 68, 70 to an air storage tank (not shown). The air so stored may be used to drive a turbine. In another embodiment (not shown) a floatable winged driving member is connected through links to a substantially horizontally disposed beam a rack and pinion arrangement enables adjustment of the distance between the driving member and the beam. In a further embodiment a double acting piston pumps sea water to a turbine. The water turbine may drive an air compressor which supplies compressed air to an air storage tank. Air from the tank may be used to drive an air turbine and a generator. The beam may be dispersed with and the driving member may be arranged above, the piston which it drives and be connected thereto by a vertically arranged shaft.
