Abstract

1477473 Welding vehicle bodies FIAT SpA 6 June 1974 [14 June 1973] 25217/74 Heading B3R In an apparatus for the automatic positioning and welding of parts to make the body of a motor vehicle, the parts in loosely assembled form are transported on conveyor 10 between upper and lower relatively vertically movable tables 308, 309 of a welding and positioning station 30. The upper table is lowered and the lower table raised by a drive mechanism comprising double piston actuator 319, racks 322. pinions 325, rockers 333, 335 and rods 334, 336 assisted by cylinders 313, 317, 318 which at least partly bear the weight of the tables. At the same time pivoted jaws 341, 342, operated by cylinders 347, 348 actuated by a switch controlled by movement of the upper table or alternatively operated by a cam slot 363 on the upper table engaging followers 361 on the jaw arms 362, engage and position the body assembly and welding elements (not shown) mounted on support devices 320, 350, 349, 351 and 352 on the tables and jaws penetrate through openings in the body assembly such as the windows, boot and engine compartment. Support devices 320, 349 and 350 also carry further body part positioning means such as clamps, (not shown) for further adjusting the relative positions of the body parts for subsequent welding by the welding elements. Tack welding may be employed at station 30 and further welding operations may be carried out at a similar station 40.
