Abstract

1477095 Apparatus for relieving arthritic pain S LISS 2 Sept 1975 [13 Sept 1974] 36114/75 Heading A5R Apparatus for relieving arthritic pain at localised areas of a patient, comprises a first astable multivibrator 12 powered by a d.c. source 8 via a power supply control circuit 3 and having an asymmetrical duty cycle having an "on" period between two-thirds and fivesixths of a cycle with an operating frequency not less than 10 HZ and not more than 40 HZ, multivibrator 12 supplying pulses to a second astable multivibrator 16 having a duty cycle of fifty per cent and operating at a frequency not less than 20 KHZ and not more than 1 MHZ, whereby the vibrator 12 modulates the pulses from vibrator 16, the resulting pulsed waveform being applied to a patients skin via contacts 30, whereby the vibrator 12 modulates the pulses being applied to a patients skin via contacts 30, 46, the current being maintained at a set level not exceeding 0.8 mA by an automatic current control 20 which compensates for changes in the impedence of the patient's skin, for example, and a timer circuit 2 discontinuing the power supply to the multivibrators automatically after a period of 3 to 4 minutes. The source 8 comprises an 18 V battery which may be recharged by a charger 68, the charger having plugs 60, 62 for insertion into receptors 26, 40 of the pulse apparatus when the contacts 29, 42 are removed therefrom, said charger rectifying A.C. mains current. A diode 74 prevents current flowing from the charger through the current control 20 and multivibrators in a reverse direction. Multivibrator 12 is preferably "on" for 75 per cent of a cycle. It is stated that the pulsed wave augments nerve flow with the apparatus arranged with the positive electrode nearer the heart of the patient.
