Abstract

1476997 Polyamide moulding composition BASF AG 3 Oct 1974 [4 Oct 1973] 42874/74 Heading C3R A polyamide moulding composition contains (by weight of the total composition) 0À1 to 2% of a metal salt of a C 8-20 carboxylic acid; 0À5 to 4% of a lactam; and 10 to 70% of a mineral filler. The polyamide is preferably nylon 6 of R.V. 2À0 to 5À0 (at 1g/100 ml in H 2 SO 4 at 25‹ C.) or nylon 66 of K.V. 2.2 to 5À4; when nylon 6 it may be a blend of extracted and unextracted polymer giving the required proportion of free lactam. Specified salts are Ca, Sn, Ba, Zn and Al stearates. Specified fillers are Ca and Mg carbonates, A1 silicates and oxides, talcum, and silica flour. They generally have a particle size below 100 microns, preferably 1 to 40 microns, with a 1/d ratio below 10 : 1, and may be treated with an adhesive promoter e.g. aminopropyl triethoxysilane. A C 4-12 lactam, preferably caprolactam may be used. The composition may also contain conventional additives e.g. stabilizers, pigments and flame retarders.
