Abstract
147,677. Norton Co., (Assignees of Norton, C. H.). July 21, 1914, [Convention date]. Disk apparatus. - Relates to a belt drive for the grinding-wheel of a grinding-machine of the type in which the wheel mounted in a longitudinally and angularly adjustable head is driven from below the grinding-head, and also to means for alining the wheel shaft with the work centres. The invention is preferably embodied in a universal grinding-machine. The grinding-wheel head 32 is mounted on the machine frame 20 which also supports a movable work-table 21, and the grinding-wheel W is carried by a shaft 30 journaled in the head, which is mounted to swivel on a slide 33 movable on a slide-base 34 which is angularly adjustable on the frame 20. The slide 33 carries a rack 36 movable by means of an annular gear 41 rotatably mounted in a bearing 42 and rotatable by hand by means of worm-gearing 43, 44. In the frame is journaled a driven shaft 50 having thereon a long driving-drum 54 connected by a belt 56 to a pulley 55 on the grinding- wheel shaft, the belt passing from the drum 54 upwardly past a long guide pulley 57, through the annular gear 41, around guide-pulleys 58, 59 to the pulley 55, and thence around a fixed pulley 60, through the annular gear and past a long guidepulley 61 to the drum; the belt thus passes to and from the head in closely adjacent parallel runs positioned substantially along the axis about which the slide-base is adjustable. The guidepulleys 57, 61, Fig. 12, are rotatable on sleeves 62 carried by non-rotating shafts 63 secured to a part 64 supported by a depending arm 70 formed on a cylindrical sleeve 71 rotatably mounted in the head, whereby the pulley may swing about the axis of the sleeve; and the guide-pullev 59 is mounted in the end of a sleeve 74 slidable, but not rotatable, in the sleeve 71 and having on its underside rack-teeth 76 engaging a pinion 87. The pinion is loosely mounted on a rod 80 slidably, but non-rotatably supported by arms formed on the sleeve 71. Clutch teeth are formed at both ends of the pinion, those on one end normally engaging similar teeth on a spring barrel 92. The barrel contains a flat spring 93, connected at one end to the barrel and at the other end to the rod 80, which acts on the pinion to keep the sleeve, 74 normally pressed outwards to enable the pulley to take up slack in the belt. To alter the tension of the spring, the rod 80 is moved longitudinally to disengage the clutch teeth on the barrel from those on the pinion, this movement engaging the teeth on the other end of the pinion with teeth on a sleeve fixed to the rod, whereby the pinion is held against rotation, and the barrel may be turned to alter the tension of the spring. The arrangement of belt and pulleys as described above permits of angular and longitudinal adjustment of the wheel head without interference with the belt drive. At the rear of the head 32 are bearings 100 for an auxiliary grinding-wheel shaft 101, driven by a belt from the shaft 30 and carrying a grinding-wheel which may be adapted for internal grinding by rotation of the head through 180 degrees about its vertical axis. In order to locate the grinding-shaft 30 exactly in the horizontal plane of the work centres, the shaft is provided with bearings each comprising a split tapered sleeve 110, Fig. 5, having tapered recesses 111, 112 at its ends and supported in a tapered hole in a casing 113 provided with nuts 114, 116 having projections 115, 117 adapted to fit in the recesses in the sleeve; by adjusting the nuts, the sleeve can be moved longitudinally to expand or to contract and can be then locked in position. On the outside of the casing are angularly-disposed flat surfaces 120, Fig. 3, and the head 32 has similarly-formed surfaces 121 and caps 122. The casings are adjusted vertically by filing or scraping the surfaces 120, 121; the shaft 101 is provided with similar bearings. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following subject-matter: In the case of plain grinding- machines, the swivel pulley 58 may be replaced by a fixed pulley, and the slide for the pulley 59 and its mechanism may be mounted on the wheelhead instead of on the sleeve 71. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
