Abstract

1476047 Centrifugal strainer and sugar treatment; mixing liquids BRAUNSCHWEIGISCHE MASCHINENBAUNSTALT 8 Dec 1975 50273/75 Headings B1C and BID Sugar crystals are separated from one liquid while passing up the wall of a frusto-conical centrifugal filtering drum 3 and thrown radially from its upper edge where they intersect downward jets of a second liquid from annular spray tube 14, resulting in mixing of the liquid and crystals in a space enclosed by belllike fixed casing 18. Assisted by the air currents created by rotating drum 3, the mixture is forced under the lower edge of casing 18 and over annular weir 22, finally being discharged (23) as a sugar solution, which may be further filtered and crystallised again or inverted for use as a sugar solution. Inner casing 13 catches the liquid passing through the wall of drum 3. The second liquid may be hot water or sugar solution, and valves (16, 10) which control the flow of second liquid to spray tube 14 and sugar crystals and first liquid to drum 3 (Fig. I not shown) are automatically adjusted in response to variations in temperature of the solution discharged through pipe (23), to maintain said temperature and consequently the sugar content of the solution constant. This assumes that the delivery temperatures of both liquids are constant. A pressure meter (37) opens valve (39) to deliver an alternative feed of second liquid to spray tube 14 if the normal feed from tube (17) fails. Nozzle tubes (11) in the drum are supplied with water or steam, and steam is also fed into the drum with the first liquid and crystals by feed device (8).
