1475281 Packaging machines ASKEYS Ltd 10 July 1974 [12 April 1973] 17689/73 Heading B8C In a machine for packing articles, such as nested ice cream cones, in side by side rows into cartons B, articles C are manually fed in rows on to endless conveyer 11 by an operator for transfer to a median location of frame 10 where a fixed number of articles in each row are received by a reciprocating sliding carriage 16 which carries the articles to a packing station S for insertion into a carton B by a pusher plate 23 mounted on a reciprocating slide 24. The flow of articles on conveyer 11 is arrested by vertically reciprocable cam operated stop 15 while carriage 16 moves to station S. Carriage 16 has four end blocks 16b in transverse pairs and runs on slides 16a, second and third stops 18 and 19 being mounted on carriers 31, 31a vertically slidable on rods 30 extending from blocks 16b under the action of cams 18a, 19a on cam plates 32 mounted on a piston-rod 17a which reciprocates the carriage. Stops 18, 19 are alternately raised and lowered as the carriage takes up its two positions, and their spacing determines the number of articles to be packed in a carton; this spacing is variable. Pusher plate 23 is pivoted on a crosshead slide 24 and has down-turned pusher blades 25, the plate being raised and lowered under cam actions as slide 24 is longitudinally reciprocated so that blades 25 may engage the rear of articles C when the carriage is in the forward position to push the articles into a carton. Articles on the carriage 16 in rows are laterally pressed together by cam-operated plates 40 which may have a joggling action. Cartons B are placed on packing table 20 by a second operator who removes them when filled. Reciprocating members are pneumatically operated with valve controlled timing.
