Abstract

1475084 Air cushion vehicles T K S MURTHY 24 July 1974 [26 July 1973] 35705/73 Heading B7K A sidewall air cushion vehicle 10 is formed with a buoyant structure 12 at the base of each side wall 11 to increase buoyancy and thereby reduce drag to enable the vehicle to operate at high speed. Flexible skirts 13 extend between the front and rear ends of the walls and the structures 12 carry water propellers 18. The hull carries air propellers 16 mounted on swivelling pylons 17 for propulsion and at least one may be swivelled for directional control of the vehicle. The structures 12 may house machinery, sonars &c. and may be used as air reservoirs for air to be supplied to the cushion when it is desired to increase the volume and pressure of the cushion during short periods of high speed operation. In this condition the skirts 13 are lowered to reduce loss of air from the enlarged cushion volume.
