Abstract

1,005,298. Air-cushion vehicles. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. Aug. 10, 1964 [Aug. 30, 19631, No. 34333/63. Headings B7A and B7K. An amphibious air cushion vehicle includes a platform or raft of sufficient positive buoyancy to support the whole vehicle and its load on water, extendable floats capable of buoyantly supporting the platform or raft clear of the water and extending in a fore-and-aft direction of the vehicle, and means arranged to maintain an air cushion beneath the vehicle when it is operating as a ground effect vehicle, the platform being arranged to carry power plant and its fuel, propulsion means driven by the power plant, and blower means, driven by the power plant, for maintaining the air cushion. A buoyant platform 1 carries a superstructure which forms a control cabin 9 and provides a landing platform 10 for a helicopter, and houses a power plant for driving air propellers mounted on fins 7 and fans for delivering air to peripheral nozzles formed in a collapsible peripheral skirt (not shown). The undersurface of the hull is recessed to accommodate a pair of collapsed floats which may be inflated to the form shown at 2 to buoyantly support the hull 1 clear of the water line indicated at 14. The floats may be constructed as described in Specification 1,003,357, and when operating as a displacement vessel the vehicle is propelled by retractable propellers 12. The floats 2 may be used as sidewalls to assist in containing the cushion when the vehicle is operating as an air-cushion vehicle.
