Abstract
1474440 Spark gaps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 5 July 1974 [5 July 1973] 29946/74 Headings H1X and H1D A main spark gap is ionised ready for a discharge by a preioniser comprising a condenser and a photon emitter which are connected in series between the main gap electrodes. The condenser, Figs. 1a, 1b, consists of plates 22a, 24 on opposited sides of an insulating layer 12, connected to strips 22, 28 respectively, deposited on layer 12. Strip 28 is resistive and connected to strip 20, which has a portion forming a gap 26 with plate 24. The schematic connections of the preioniser 10, connected across the electrodes 32, 34 of main spark gap 30, are shown in Fig. 2. When an overvoltage impulse arrives, it includes a high frequency component to which the condenser offers little impedance, so that the main voltage appears across resistance 28 and gap 26. Gap 26 breaks down before the main gap 30, so that photons emitted by gap 26 ionise gap 30 which is ready to conduct as soon as the voltage across it reaches the break-down voltage. It is thus assured that gap 30 will properly protect the apparatus connected thereto. The main gap and preioniser may be assembled on a disc (Figs. 3a, 3b, not shown), and the discs may be piled to form a spark gap arrestor.
