Abstract

1474437 Flying shears; work finders MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO 1 July 1974 [2 July 1973] 29007/74 Heading B3W Apparatus for cropping and/or dividing rod &c. emerging from a rolling mill comprises two adjacent shears, one directing the length following the cut upwards and the other directing it downwards, switching means for directing the moving rod selectively to one or other shear and means for receiving rod from the shears. As shown rotary shears 24, 26 and 28, 30 are mounted side by side on common shafts, and rod is directed to the respective shears by a pivoted hollow switch 12 movable between positions 18 and 20, Fig. 1. Cropped lengths are guided by a deflector 48 into a box 57 and lengths to be wound on reels (not shown) reach them via a rotary switch 34 which passes rod selectively through a pipe 70, aligned by means of a pneumatic cylinder 74 with any one of pipes 76, 78, 80, or a pipe 72 provided with three similar pipes (not visible in Fig. 2B). In operation, with the switch 12 in position 18 and the deflector 48 engaging a separator 32, rod is passed between the blades 24, 26 and down a shoot 56, a sensor 86 actuating the shear when a predetermined crop length has passed it. The leading end 90, of the following length, Fig. 7, is deflected upwardly to ride over the separator 32 into passage 66 of the switch 34 and thence to a reel. To divide the rod when a reel is full the separator is swung out of its housing (36), Fig. 5 (not shown), by a pneumatic cylinder (46) and the deflector 48 is lowered by a pneumatic cylinder 52, Fig. 2B, and the switch 34 is rotated to place the empty passage 68 uppermost. The separator is replaced, shear 24, 26 is actuated and the leading end (91) Fig. 11 (not shown) is directed above the separator into the passage 68. To shear the tail crop, the switch 12 is pivoted to position 20 aligned with shear 28, 30, the deflector 48 is raised and the shear is actuated, the leading end (92), Fig. 12 (not shown), of the crop portion (94) being directed to pass below the separator 32 and be guided by the reflector 48 into the scrap box 57. The sensor actuating the shear 28, 30 also actuates rollers 21 to feed the tail crop to the box 57. A pivoted gate 58 directs severed rod portions into a scrap portion or a sampling portion of the box 57.
