Abstract

1474432 Air distributing devices; space heating or cooling apparatus R DARMSTADT and I ENCK 30 May 1974 [30 May 1973] 24107/74 Headings F4V and F4S In an air supply system for a building having a central air supply unit for feeding air under pressure to an air distributing device in each room, each device comprises an inlet 2 connected to the supply unit, an opening 3 to receive or discharge a convection air flow, an opening 4 defining an outlet for air flow through the inlet 2 and an outlet or inlet for the convection airflow, a heat exchanger 8 between openings 2, 3 and opening 4, an air-pressure reducing nozzle or nozzles 9 upstream of the heat exchanger for the air flow through inlet 2, and a switching valve 7 selectively operable to fully close opening 3 and fully open inlet 2 or to fully close inlet 2 and fully open opening 3. The device serves as a convector space heater or cooler when air is not supplied to the inlet 2. In the form shown, the valve 7 is pivotally mounted and is biased by a spring and/or gravity bias towards its position fully closing the inlet 2, and is movable against said bias to its position fully closing the opening 3 by the energy of the air flow through the inlet 2. The device is lined with sound insulating material 10, and the valve 7 is filled with such material. The wall of valve 7 which faces the inlet 2 is a perforated metal plate for sound attenuation. A pivotally mounted damper 13 below the opening 4 is biased by a spring and/or gravity bias to a vertical position, and is moved to the postion shown by airflow through the inlet 2 to increase the outflow velocity of such airflow. The heat exchanger 8 may be operated with hot or cold water, steam or oil, or may be electrically operated. The heat exchangers 8 of the system may be thermostatically controlled singly or in groups in accordance with the desired room temperature. In alternative constructions, the valve 7 is operated manually, or by power operated means actuated by switching pulses from the central supply unit. The central unit may filter, heat or cool, and dry or moisten the air supplied to the distributing devices.
