Abstract

1474174 Embossing keratinous fabric IWS NOMINEE CO Ltd and SMITHSON & GLEDHILL Ltd 16 July 1974 [17 July 1973] 34006/73 Heading DIP A process for embossing keratinous fabric comprises adjusting the pH of the fabric to within the range 6.5 to 9.0 (where not already in this range), treating the fabric in the pH range with a solution of a setting agent, subjecting the treated fabric while still moist to the action of a heated embossing surface to impose the desired surface impression, and subsequently drying the material. The pH adjustment may be with aqueous alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate if the textile is initially acidic, or with acetic acid if it is initially alkaline. The setting agent may be monoethanolamine sesquisulphite, or an alkali metal bisulphite. Embossing may be effected using a heated calendar, preferably at 200-230‹C. The tetxile is preferably a wool and/or mohair fabric and may contain up to 25% of non- keratinous material. As shown the fabric 10 passes into the nip between an engraved embossing roller 16 and a counter roller 14 around which is passed a felt blanket 20 circulating over a tension roller 22, pressure being applied to the embossing roller by a top pressure roller 18 of paper construction. Infra-red heaters 26 and 28 provide a drying action for the blanket 20 and emerging fabric respectively before the latter passes to a festoon dryer (not shown).
