Abstract

1365706 Mercerizing with liquid ammonia CLUETT PEABODY & CO INC 23 Dec 1971 [14 Jan 1971] 59987/71 Headings D1L and D1P Cellulosic e.g. cotton fabric is mercerized with liquid ammonia without substantial shrinkage by: advancing continuously a web of the fabric in turn through an impregnating station and a removal station; impregnating the web with liquid ammonia at the impregnating station, and removing the ammonia from the impregnated web, the residence time between application and removal of the ammonia on any region of the fabric being from 0.6 to 9.0 seconds, preferably 2.5-7.2 seconds. This residence time may be controlled by regulating the speed of advance of a cellulosic fabric web between impregnation and removal stations and by heating the web to dry it. A mercerizing apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises an insulated treatment chamber 12 maintained at a reduced pressure by exhaust means in communication with a vent 28. A fabric web 11 is advanced continuously through the chamber and passes via a seal 14 and rollers 15, 16 through a trough 17 containing liquid ammonia. The trough has a float 18 connected to a microswitch 19 which acts via a solenoid 21 to operate a valve 22 in a supply line 23. The impregnated web passes over a bow roller 32 (see Fig. 2) which spreads and smoothes the web prior to its passage between squeeze rollers 33, 34. Liquid ammonia removed from the web at this stage is returned to the trough via a pan 36. The web passes over a further bow roller 35 into a dryer 13 wherein the web is conducted on a heated blanket 38 over a drum 39. The blanket is endless and is cycled by means of rollers 41 over a heated drum 42. The web is conducted by rollers 43, 44 out of the chamber via a seal 45, for further processing. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the roller 16 is replaced by a larger roller (16a) co-operating with a heated can (46) the web passing under the roller (16a), for immersion in the liquid ammonia between the roller and can, and over the can for removal of the ammonia. The bow roller 32 and squeeze rolls 33, 34 are omitted. Impregnation of the web may alternatively be by spraying. The process reduces the need for applying weft-wise tension to the web.
