Abstract
1473769 Casting ingots HOOGOVENS IJMUIDEN BV 4 Nov 1975 [20 Nov 1974] 45782/75 Heading B3F In a method of producing steel ingots, unkilled steel is cast into an ingot mould in a single pouring action, after a period of time during which partial solidification takes place, the remaining liquid content of the mould is fully killed by the addition of a deoxidising agent and is subsequently subjected to homogenisation by the injection of a gas, and is characterized in that the mould is uncovered, e.g. does not have an insulating hot top and/or a slug layer, and after homogenisation the ingot is force cooled by means of a cooling fluid so as to at least partially solidify it from the upper surface downwards. In a specific example homogenisation takes place by lowering a lance to near the bottom of the mould and injecting air for 20-30 seconds. The lance is then removed and water sprayed onto the top surface for 15-30 minutes. The invention is said to reduce the time between casting and rolling and to reduce the waste from impurities in the top of the ingot. The deoxidising agent may be aluminium ribbon.
