Abstract

1473708 Tubular heat exchange elements UOP Inc 4 July 1974 [5 July 1973] 29603/74 Heading F4S A heat exchange tube 10 is formed with a plurality of integral external fins 12, 14 and a plurality of integral internal multistart helical ridges 16, 18, the internal helical ridges having a lead angle of less than 60 degrees (as measured from a perpendicular to the tube axis) and a cross-sectional profile which includes a pair of side boundaries defined by concave and convex portions 36 and 38 which meet at a point of inflexion 40. As shown the external fins are helical and have a lead angle which is different in magnitude and/or sense from the internal helical ridges and a pitch distance which is less than that of the internal ridges. Alternatively the external fins may be annular or longitudinal. The dimensions of the internal ridges are such that: b/p lies between 0À1 and 0À2 where b = width of a ridge and p its pitch, e/y lies between 1À5 and 5À0 where e=height of the ridge and y = height of ridge from its tip to the point of inflexion, and a parameter # defined by #=e<SP>2</SP>/pdi is less than 0À0025 where di=inside diameter of the tube.
