Abstract

1,146,162. Tubular heat exchange elements. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORP. 19 Nov., 1966 [27 Dec., 1965], No. 45360/66. Heading F4S. A tubular heat exchange conduit 11 contains a turbulator element formed of rod-like material and shaped so as to provide portions of the element extending generally transversely of the longitudinal conduit axis in not more than four planes extending lengthwise of the conduit, the turbulator element engaging the conduit 11 at spaced points along its length. In one form of turbulator shape suitable angling of the turbulator wire 25 results in a generally spiral pattern, the end view of which is of square shape, as shown in Figs. 14 and 15, or triangular shape (Figs. 12 and 13, not shown). In alternative forms (Figs. 8-11), the elements have longitudinal undulations projecting outwardly towards the interior surface of the conduit 11 which lie in three or four circumferentially spaced radial planes, the transverse cross-section so produced being either Y-shaped as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, or " cross " shaped (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown). Simpler forms (Figs. 3-7, not shown) have longitudinal undulations (sinusoidal or irregular) which lie in a single plane. The turbulator element may alternatively consist of a central wire with cross-wires attached at regular intervals (Fig. 5, not shown).
