Abstract
1473088 V/STOL aircraft ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 21 June 1974 [28 June 1973 30 Jan 1974] 30847/73 and 04334/74 Heading B7G [Also in Division F1] A V/STOL aircraft has a gas turbine engine having a fan 16 for delivering compressed air to a core engine 25 and to a pair of swivellable nozzles 18, and burners 20 for augmenting the thrust available from the swivellable nozzles. The fan 16 and core engine 25 are arranged so that at least 90% of the work produced by the core engine is used in driving the fan 16, and a relatively low pressure discharge is fed via a duct to nozzles 32 at the rear of the aircraft for pitch and yaw control. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the relatively low pressure discharge is obtained from the core engine exhaust, but in an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the low pressure discharge comprises part of the delivery from the fan 16. In the latter embodiment the core engine exhaust is ducted to a further pair of swivellable nozzles (58). The nozzles 32 are four pairs of hinged channelsection members which are selectively opened or closed to direct the low pressure discharge rearwardly, forwardly or radially (Fig. 4, not shown). Alternatively the yaw and pitch control nozzles may comprise four butterfly valves (61 to 64), Fig. 9 (not shown), and a pair of hinged buckets 65, 66.
