Abstract

1472970 Purified phosphoric acid RHONEPOULENC INDUSTRIES 31 Jan 1975 [1 Feb 1974] 4336/75 Heading C1A Very pure phosphoric acid solutions are prepared by the-counter-current extraction of wetprocess phosphoric acid solution in the presence of sulphuric acid and water by means of a waterimmiscible organic solvent, contacting the resulting organic phosphoric acid solution with an aqueous solution containing phosphate and calcium ions (prepared from calcium phosphate, phosphoric acid and water such that the Ca<SP>2+</SP> content is from 2-6% by wt. as CaO), in order to precipitate the sulphate ions as suspension in the aqueous solution washing the phosphoric acid in organic solvent with water and separating the organic phase from the aqueous washing phase, and subjecting the organic phase to liquid-liquid contact with an aqueous phase to transfer purified phosphoric acid to the aqueous phase and separating off the organic solvent from the product. The second step is preferably performed continuously within a recycled flow of aqueous phosphate and calcium ion-containing solution. The organic solvent is generally a C 4 -C 8 aliphatic alcohol such as isobutyl alcohol, and it may be collected after the last step, possible purified, before recycling for the extraction step. After the washing step the organic extract may be treated either with water to produce an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid or with a neutralizing compound such as alkali metal or ammoniacal compound, to give a partially neutralized phosphoric acid, e.g. (mono) sodium phosphate.
