Abstract

1472840 Glycine SHOWA DENKO KK 17 Sept 1975 [18 Sept 1974 (3)] 38222/75 Heading C2C A method of obtaining glycine from an aqueous solution containing glycine sodium sulphate and monosodium iminodiacetate (e.g. derived from the hydrolysis of glyinonitrile) comprises (a) heating the solution at a temperature ranging between the lower and upper limit temperatures as shown by the lines S and G of the accompanying graph whereby to crystallize out sodium sulphate, (b) filtering off the crystallized sodium sulphate whilst still hot and (c) adding water to the hot filtrate and then reducing the pressure to 10-40 mm. of Hg so as to cause evaporation of water and cooling of the filtrate to 33-40‹ C. whereby to crystallize out the glycine. The mother liquor may be recycled but before doing so sulphuric acid is preferably added to adjust the pH to 1À9-2À9 to precipitate out the iminodiacetic acid. The glycine obtained in step (c) contains some of the monosodium diacetate and may be separated from it by subjecting an aqueous solution of the mixture to electrodialysis with ion-exchange membranes.
