Abstract
1471787 Carriers for heat treating articles CERAVER 30 April 1974 [8 May 1973] 18963/74 Heading F4B In a tunnel kiln for the heat treatment of cylindrical objects, such as ceramic tubes, which move through the kiln in work carriers, the objects rotate within the carriers as the latter are rolled through the kiln along a fixed surface, and distance pieces separating successive carriers. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 each work carrier is formed by an array of support tubes 5, each containing an object 6 to be heat treated and retained therein by stoppers 7, the array being mounted in apertured discs having flanges 1, the discs being keyed to an axle 2 having a wheel 3 at each end. The kiln, Figs. 4 and 6, comprises a gas-tight body 8, an inlet chamber 9, and an outler chamber 10, the chambers having loading and unloading means for the body 8 which includes a hearth 22 and tracks 23. At the ends of the kiln the work carrier is rolled along the hearth 22 and at the middle portion (that is the kiln zone at the highest temperature) the wheels 3 roll along the tracks 23. The distance piece between adjacent work carriers is in the form of a roller 15 with an axle idling mounting guide trunnions 16. Alternatively, the distance piece may be in the form of two discs of a diameter to contact adjacent wheels 3, the discs being arranged on an axle idly mounting guide wheels, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). In another form, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), the distance piece may comprise lateral flanges, each carrying an odd number of wheels bridging the distance between adjacent wheels 3. In further alternative forms, the distance piece may comprise vertically spaced rollers carried by links, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), or triangularly disposed rollers or wheels, Fig. 13 (not shown). In Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown) the array of support tubes constituting the work carrier is replaced by a plurality of individual support tubes, each receiving an object to be fixed, the tubes being arranged within the kiln in two layers which are progressed by lines of distance pieces travelling along grooves in the kiln hearth. In further embodiments, Figs. 16 to 18 (not shown), the distance pieces are formed by recessed members placed on the support tubes.
