Abstract

1471762 Anti-skid hydraulic brake boosters GIRLING Ltd 28 Jan 1975 [13 Feb 1974 4 June 1974 30 Nov 1974] 06447/74 24597/74 and 51962/74 Heading F2F In a master cylinder assembly comprising a pedal-operated value assembly 34, 36, for controlling a supply of pressure fluid (in chamber 28) to a power chamber 13 on the opposite side of a first piston 5/59 to a pressure space 17 with an outlet 18 to a wheel brake, a second piston 16, operating in the opposite direction to the 1st piston is provided actuatable by the pedal to generate fluid pressure in the space 17. The second piston 16 is normally inoperative due to the clearance between a shoulder 26 on the piston and a plate 24 actuated by the pedal, but should the pressure fluid supply fail the brakes can be applied without the seal drag normally present from the booster means. Preferably the boost pressure is supplied to a plurality of respective pressure spaces 17 for individual front wheels and the rear wheels and the pivotally mounted equalizing plate 24 actuates respective second cylinders for the front wheels at least. In operation on initial pedal movement of rod 3 a valve member 34 closes bore 35 leading through passage 37 to a fluid reservoir. On further movement an extension of the member 34 lifts a ball 36 from its seat to connect the pressure chamber 28 through passage 43, antiskid valve 50, and inlet 19 to the left hand end of piston 5 and the space 13. This moves the pistons 5 and 59 (which may be integral) to close the recuperation valve 21 and pressurize the space 17 and hence a brake actuator. The solenoid operated anti-skid valve 50 is responsive to deceleration of the corresponding braked wheel to move the valve ball 53 to close the space 13 from the pressure supply passage 43, and connect it to a reservoir to de-energize the brake. In a modification (Fig. 3) pressure fluid is supplied to a chamber 46 of larger effective area than the space 13 on sufficient deceleration to move the first piston 5 to the left to relieve the braking pressure. In further modifications (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) the second piston has longitudinal bores (75), (76) leading to ports 18, 20 connected by flexible pipes to a brake actuator and a reservoir respectively and (Fig. 11, not shown) the second piston 16 is hollow and has a head at its right hand end incorporating a recuperation valve (21) and ports 18, 20 connected again to flexible pipes. In Fig. 7 the pressure chamber (13) is constituted by a stepped piston (64) mounted around the piston (5) and abutting a shoulder thereof. To provide feel a rubber spring 97 (Fig. 13) may be enclosed within telescopic members between the pedal rod 95 and an equalizing plate 82.
