Abstract

A fluid pressure vehicle braking system has an antiskid control unit 34 and modulator 32 operatively located between a pressure source, such as a master cylinder 10 actuated by a booster unit 12 controlled by a pedal 14, and the brake actuators 26, 28, 40, 42 of wheels relating to first and second axles to modulate the braking pressure under control of unit 34 in responce to skidding of at least one wheel, and a second braking pressure modulating device 44 located between the control unit 34 and actuators 40, 42 and responsive to the loading on the second axle. Modulator 32 has an hydraulic piston operating a spring loaded check valve and operated by a piston movable in a pressure chamber connected to the engine manifold via a solenoid operated valve on the one hand and connectable to atmosphere via a second solenoid operated valve on the other hand, the valves operating in response to signals from unit 34. The device 44 is an apportioning valve. If master cylinder 10 is of a split or tandem type the modulator 32 may have two independent modulator pistons simultaneously operated to modulate the separate pressures to front and rear wheels
