Abstract

1471301 Continuous casting HAZELETT STRIP CASTING CORP 3 May 1974 [3 May 1973] 19627/74 Heading B3F In a twin-belt casting machine, at least one carriage U (or L) carrying a belt 12 (or 14) revolving around rolls 18, 20 (or 24, 26), has a removable core assembly 41 (or 42) for cooling and supporting the belt. The cores are identical and interchangeable if there are two, although positioned in a mirror-image relationship on either side of the casting space C. The carriages U, L include frames 16, 22 and have channelshaped openings forming recesses 43, 44 extending the major part of the length between the rolls 18, 20 and 24, 26 respectively. The recesses are open towards the belts 12, 14 for receiving the removable cores 41, 42. A core assembly comprises; a base 46 (for securing by screws 76 to the frame, e.g. 22); coolant conduits 48 each with a vane 52, Fig. 4, for applying liquid coolant from outlets 56 to the back of a belt 12 or 14; and finned rollers 60 whose shafts 72 are supported largely by stringers 66, there being couplings (88) by which the conduits 48 can be easily disconnected from and connected to a liquid coolant supply (manifolds 86, 96, Fig. 1, not shown). The rollers 60 are each divided into three segments aligned to span the belt width and two stringers 66 separate the segments. The outer ends of the rollers are mounted in side rails (74) of the core assembly and vertical keys 80 engage between the rail ends and the carriage frame 22 (or 16) to locate the assembly. Outer edges of the base-plate 46 are rebated to provide lips to be held by complementarily-rebated longitudinal clamps (78) on a carriage U or L. To remove a core assembly 41 or 42, the upper carriage U is lifted by a lift arm (32) pivoted on top of a back frame (30) of the machine and the respective casting belt 12 or 14 removed to expose the assembly.
