Abstract

1,258,735. Continuous casting machines; rolling metals. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 13 Jan., 1970 [13 Jan., 1969], No. 1702/70. Headings B3F and B3M. A continuous casting machine includes apparatus for reducing the cross-sectional area of the cast strand 101 said apparatus comprising a pair of units 133 and 139, each unit including a frame, a power operable roller 141 supported by said frame, a pivot 143 about which the frame can turn, and means 113 for moving the units 133 and 139 relative to one another. Two such pairs of units are provided, one pair having its rollers 141 disposed horizontally and the other having its rollers 153 disposed vertically. Between the two pairs of units a straightener device 131 may be provided. This consists of two pairs of arms 147 and 149, each pair being pivotable about a shaft 155 and carrying a roller 165. Piston-cylinder units 157, 159 connect the pairs of arms to each other and arms 149 to a base 161. The device 131 may be used to detach the starter bar 102 from the cast strand 101. The billet-reducing rollers 79 are driven by fluid piston motors 37 acting through a worm (37) and the train of gears shown in Fig. 4. The shaft 73 carrying the roller 79 is journalled in a bearing 77 mounted in a bearing block 78 which is mounted on the frame 31 in such a way that the bearing 77 and block 78 can be easily removed from the frame. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the reducing rollers are mounted at the ends of their shafts.
