Abstract

1471212 Making heat exchangers GARRETT CORP 8 April 1974 [16 April 1973 (2)] 15503/74 Heading B3A [Also in Division F4] In a counterflow plate heat exchanger 10 having inlet and outlet manifolds integrally combined with a counterflow heat exchange section and comprising a plurality of plates 30 stacked within a housing 14 to define a core 12 of first and second fluid passages alternating with one another, each plate is formed at opposite sides thereof with a series of openings having upstanding flanged collars 36 which when placed in abutting or nested relationship with flanged collars of adjacent plates and brazed together define inlet and outlet manifolds 16, 17 for the first fluid, namely air to be heated. Openings 38 permit flow of air between the manifolds 16, 17 and the first fluid passages in the core. Openings 40 provided between the manifolds 16 and 17 permit flow of second fluid, e.g. hot gas from a turbine, to and from the second fluid passages in the core; second fluid enters the housing 14 through an inlet 22 and after passing through the core 12 leaves through an outlet 23. Each plate 30 is provided with peripheral flange 42 which abuts and is brazed to a similar flange of an adjacent plate of the stack. Fin members 32 and 34 are located in the first and second fluid passages of the core; the fins may be rectangular, triangular, wavy, perforated or lowered, or alternatively pin fins may be used. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 10-13, not shown) the core is V-shaped and has a single air inlet manifold (60) provided at the centre of one side and a pair of air outlet manifolds (61) at the extremities of the opposite side of the core; diagonally orientated ribs are provided in the flow passages or by the plates (see Fig. 13) for directing the air and hot gas to and from a central counter-flow section (56) of the core.
