Abstract

1429159 Plate heat exchangers UNITED AIRCRAFT PRODUCTS Inc 21 Feb 1974 [4 May 1973] 7943/74 Heading F4S A plate heat exchanger which after assembly of the plates is bonded (e.g. brazed) into a unitary structure, comprises plates 31 (Figs. 4, 5) separated by spacing means disposed between adjacent plates and comprising spacers such as 16-20 (shown in detail in Fig. 7) disposed at the ends only of the plates and being brought into correct registration therewith by means of locating flanges such as 34, 35 on the plates, these spacers 16-20 alternating through the plate stack with peripheral spacers such as 38- 41 (shown in detail in Fig. 3) all the spacers co-operating with plate apertures such as 32, 33 to form inlet and outlet manifolds for a first fluid flowing in alternate plate interspaces. A second fluid flows in cross-flow relation to the first fluid, in the intermediate plate interspaces which are bounded in part by bar members 23 of the spacers 16-20. All the plate interspaces contain secondary heat exchange surfaces comprising corrugated fin elements 46 ior 47. Plates 10, 11 form the ends of the stack and inlet/outlet connections 14, 15 may be provided in one or both plates. Inlet/outlet connections may also be formed in the peripheral portions, such as 21, Fig. 7, of the spacers. Modified plates 31 with a manifold opening 32 or 33 at one end only of the plate may be interposed to modify the flow path of the first fluid. The outline of the spacers and plates may be modified to provide manifolds of square cross-section instead of the semicircular form shown. In use, a fluid such as hot air or oil flows in the passages served by the manifolds, and is cooled by ambient air flowing in the intermediate passages. The same ambient air stream may serve two heat exchangers interconnected via a common end plate 10. The spacers may be cut from an extruded length of suitable cross-section.
