Abstract

1470471 Casting reinforced concrete walls; pre-stressing C I WILLIAMS 23 Jan 1975 [19 Feb 1974] 3025/75 Headings E1S and E1W A circular pre-stressed reinforced concrete wall is constructed by erecting spaced curved forms 22, 23 with end panels 39 to define a first sector of the wall, placing a reinforcing rod 40 inside a shielding tube 44 circumferentially within the casting space, with threaded ends of the rod projecting from the end panels 39, pouring concrete into the space and allowing it to set, exposing at least partly the ends of the set concrete, applying bearing plates 46 and nuts 48 to the rod ends 42, and tensioning the rod and securing the nuts; this procedure being repeated for each successive wall sector, except that one end of the casting space is defined by an end of the previous sector, and one end of the reinforcing rod is coupled to the rod of the previous sector; and the ends of the casting space for the final or closure sector being defined by opposed ends of the first and last-constructed sectors, the reinforcing rod 66 being coupled at one end to the rod of the last-constructed sector, and at the other end 43 having opposite-handed threading to the end 42 of the rod of the first sector to which it is coupled by a turnbuckle 64a, an access space being boxed out around the turnbuckle, whereby after the concrete has set the turnbuckle can be tightened to tension the rod 66. After the tensioning of each rod, grout is injected via an axial bore 41 of the rod and a transverse bore 58 in the rod or its associated coupling, into the space between the rod and its tube 44; the grout is injected into the last rod 66 through an inlet 65 into the turnbuckle.
