Abstract

1469868 Graft polymer modifiers for vinyl chloride polymers NIPPON ZEON CO Ltd 24 July 1974 [26 July 1973] 32734/74 Heading C3G A vinyl chloride polymer composition comprises (1) 80 to 99% by weight of a vinyl chloride homopolymer, or a copolymer of vinyl chloride content at least 70% by weight, and (2) 20 to 1% of a graft copolymer of which the trunk portion is a rubbery polymer derived, at least to the extent of 60% by weight, from one or more diene monomers, and the grafts are derived from methyl methacrylate (15 to 70 % by weight) and styrene (85 to 30% by weight), and which is made by first subjecting either the styrene or the methyl methacrylate to polymerizing conditions in an aqueous dispersion of the rubbery trunk polymer until 40 to 90% thereof has polymerized, and then adding, over a period continuously or in stages, the methyl methacrylate or styrene (as the case may be) and continuing the polymerization until first substantially all of the first-added monomer and then substantially all of the second-added monomer has polymerized, the total amount of styrene and methyl methacrylate polymerized being 20 to 100% of the weight of the rubbery trunk polymer. Up to 25% by weight of the methyl methacrylate may be replaced by another methacrylate or acrylate and up to 25% of the styrene by another aromatic vinyl or vinylidene compound. Examples are given in which the graft copolymer used is produced by grafting styrene and methyl methacrylate on to a rubber prepared from butadiene, divinyl benzene and, optionally, styrene or styrene and acrylonitrile.
