Abstract
1469765 Magnetic separation ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO Ltd 28 June 1974 [10 July 1973] 32926/73 Heading B2J Apparatus for separating magnetic impurities from a fluid, e.g. a clay slurry, comprises a plurality of chambers such as 1 and 2 each having a porous packing 6 of ferromagnetic material located between an inlet 9 and an outlet 3 for the fluid; a superconducting electromagnet 10; and means, not shown, for moving each chamber in turn first into the operating zone of the electromagnet for the purpose of treating fluid passing through the respective chamber, and then out of the said zone into a flushing station where the accumulated magnetic particles in the chamber can be removed by washing with water. The packing 6 may be of stainless steel wool or a metal foam, or it may be in the form of spheres, pellets, filings or particles of irregular shape. In a second embodiment the chambers are interconnected by a rigid rod (23) and are moved relative to the electromagnet by means of a rack and pinion (34, 35), the flushing stations including demagnetising coils (43, 49) Fig. 2 (not shown).
