Abstract

1469727 α,α-Disubstituted benzylalcohol and its formate and acetate esters DOW CHEMICAL CO 29 April 1975 [3 May 1974 (2)] 17825/75 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of Formula I wherein X=H, Cl or CH 3 ; n is 0 or 1-3; radicals R, which are in the 3-, 4- or 5-position are independently Br, Cl, F, NO 2 , CF 3 , C 1-3 alkyl or C 1-3 alkoxy; T is H, Z is Br, Cl, I or when T is H, Z is QSO 2 O where Q is C 1-18 alkyl, halo C 1-4 alkyl, benzyl, phenyl, optionally substituted phenyl or benzyl where the substituents are selected from halogen, NO 2 and C 1-4 alkyl or Q is NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>11</SP> where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> each is H or C 1-3 alkyl. Compounds in which T is hydrogen and Z is halogen may be prepared by reacting the appropriately substituted styrene with a halogenating agent in the presence of water and a carrier medium or by reacting the compound in which T is other than hydrogen with an alkanol in the presence of acid, compounds in which T is may be prepared by reacting the styrene reagent with (a) a halogenating agent, water and dimethyl formamide and (b) an acetate agent such as silver acetate and a halogenating agent respectively; compounds in which Z is QSO 2 O are obtained by reacting the corresponding phenyl- 2-hydroxy butan-1-ol with the appropriate sulphonyl halide. Herbicidal compositions comprise a compound of Formula I together with a carrier.
