Abstract

1468431 Automatic core loaders; shoots J P GERHART 20 May 1974 [6 June 1973] 22354/74 Headings B8R and B8S An automatic core loader for disposing a plurality of spaced cores 12, Fig. 2, on a mandrel 14, comprises a core box 18 provided with spaced semicircular grooves 26 for the cores 12 and movable longitudinally by a rack and pinion drive 152, 154, Fig. 6, past a discharge of a shoot 16, Fig. 1, whose other end is connected to a hopper 54. The cores 12 in the hopper are discharged into the shoot 16 by a rotary brush 14 and moved downwardly along the shoot by further rotary brushes 84, 86, 88, Fig. 1. At the beginning of core loading which is controlled by a rotary circuit (Fig. 9) an interposer pin 401 at the end of armature of a solenoid 402 is retracted and the cores are loaded into the box 18. At some time during its travel the mandrel 14 is caused to enter the core box and the cores are disposed about it. When the core box 18 has reached its end of travel by striking a stop 34 and disconnecting the drive 152, 154 a mandrel inflating head 202 is moved into one end of the mandrel 14 which is clamped by a pneumatically operable clamp. Following inflation and from clamping of the cores 12 on the mandrel the latter is lifted out of the core box 18 by a driven ejector arm 350, Fig. 13, and discharged on to a table 370. The mandrels 14 are supplied from a table, provided with an interposer 306, using the arm 350, which is carried by a support 336 and reciprocated between end position indicated by switches 700, 708 by an endless chain drive 300. The core loader is stopped if the cores 12 fail to be deposited in the grooves 26. This condition is detected by a switch 530 which stops a motor 24 of the drive 152, 154. Regular deposition of cores 12 in grooves 26 of the core box 18, causes advancement of the box 18 to its right-most position at which a reflected light control 32, Fig. 6, causes motor 24 to be de-energized to stop advancement of the box 18 which however continues under its momentum until a foot 33 engages a stop 34 on a pneumatic device 38.
