Abstract

1467864 Making expoxidized olefinic compounds by electrolysis BASF AG 16 July 1974 [17 July 1973] 31398/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] Olefin oxide compounds are made by direct electrochemical conversion of an olefinic compound (optionally inertly substituted) via the unisolated intermediate halohydrin in an undivided cell with an electrode gap of 0À05-2À0 mm. An aqueous bromide or chloride electrolyte of 0À1-10% by wt. and having a cation not depositable by electrolysis, e.g. KI, is used at a c.d. of 0À1-100 A/dm.<SP>2</SP> with a volume ratio of olefinic compound : electrolyte of 1 : 100 to 1 : 1 when the olefin is gaseous. The electrolyte flow velocity may be 1-1000 cm./sec., the ratio of olefin feed : theoretical olefin consumption 1 : 1 to 100 : 1, the temperature 0-100‹ C., pH 3-12 and pressure 1-100 At. The electrolyte may include an inert conductive salt, e.g. Na 2 SO 4 or NaClO 4 and an organic solvent, e.g. acetic acid, DMF or dioxane. The olefin treated may be ethylene, propylene, 1- or 2-butylene, allyl chloride, styrene, cyclohexene or pyrroline-3. A working concentration of 0À01-20% of oxide may be maintained in the electrolyte. Batch or continuous operation is possible. The anode may be graphite, graphite filled plastic, magnetite, a Pt group metal or metal oxide, Pt foil bonded to graphite or Ti via graphite-filled adhesive, a Ti/TiO 2 /RuO 2 ceramic or RuO 2 -activated Ti bonded to graphite. A cathode of graphite, steel, G-Ni steel, Cu, Fe, Ti or Pb may be used.
