Abstract

1467506 Glass coated pigments MIZUSAWA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 23 May 1974 [23 May 1973] 23115/74 Heading C4A [Also in Division Cl] A pigment composition having improved abrasion resistance consists of particles composed mainly of an inorganic colour pigment and a continuous solid glass coating covering the surface of said pigment, said coating being formed of a continuous phase composed mainly of an alkali metal polysilicate having an M 2 O : SiO 2 molar ratio of 1 : 5 to 1: 2 wherein M stands for an alkali metal, in which the coating is present in an amount of 3 to 40% by weight based on the pigment particles (as SiO 2 ) and the specific surface area ratio R s , which is the ratio of the surface area of the coated pigment particles to that of the uncoated pigment particles, is at most 1À07. The pigment compositions are suitably made by wetting the pigment particles with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal polysilicate of formula M 2 O . n-SiO 2 where n is 2-5, preferably having a pH of at least 11 and preferably a concentration of 0À5 to 10% by weight as SiO 2 and then drying by evaporation. The process may be repeated several times until the desired coating is achieved. The glass coating preferably comprises 10 to 30% by weight of the pigment and has a glass transition point ranging from 400‹ to 500‹ C. The pigment may be lead chromate or mixtures thereof with lead sulphate and/or lead molybdate, tri-lead tetroxide, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, cadmium mercury red, cobalt violet, ultramarine, prussian blue, chrome green or chrome red.
