Abstract

1467387 Printed circuit assembly RCA CORPORATION 17 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 31582/74 Heading H1R A printed inductor is so designed that its inductance can be increased by removal of material. Typically it is a trimming inductor in a resonant LC circuit (Fig. 1) in series with a larger fixed inductor 14. The conductors 16, 18 and the capacitor electrodes 8, 12 may be of glass frit loaded with particles of silver, palladium and palladium oxide screen printed on alumina substrate 4 and fired, the capacitor dielectric 10 being of glass. The amount of trimming of the capacitor required to take the resonant frequency from an original value below the desired frequency to a value slightly above it is calculated and the top electrode notched by abrasion or laser machining to achieve this. Then, preferably after partial encapsulation, slots are formed in strips 20, 22, 24 in turn by abrasion, while the resonant frequency is monitored, to form a serpentine current path of increased inductance to complete the inductance. Fixed inductance 15 may be dispensed with when a lower inductance is required.
