Abstract

1466066 Bearings; cylinders LAYSTALL ENG CO Ltd 14 May 1974 [14 Feb 1973] 7307/73 Headings F2A and F2T [Also in Divisions B3 and F1] The process described in Specification 1,413,683 is modified by the use of grit particles in at least a final operation on the surface being impregnated smaller than 500 screen size. The grit particles may be of the order of 1000 screen size or less and be used in a single operation, or in a second or finishing operation to produce the grit-loaded surface. The grit may be used dry or in a liquid suspension and embedded by impact or pressure, and may be broken down from grit used in a prior operation, such as the lapping of a bore of a cylinder liner. The grit may be silicon carbide and embedded in a cylindrical surface by a rotating tool having a spring- loaded roller, or impacted against a flat surface, such as a brake disc, using a spring-loaded tool or hammer. After impregnating, the surface is polished to remove protruding particles and sharp edges using still smaller particles.
