Abstract
1463289 Horizontal diaphragm cell PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 11 April 1975 [12 April 1974] 14909/75 Heading C7B In an electrolytic cell 1 divided horizontally by a permeable barrier 11 into an anolyte chamber 21 containing a horizontal anode 23 and a catholyte chamber 31 containing a horizontal cathode 33 respectively above and below the barrier, alkali metal (e.g. Na or K) Cl brine is fed to the anolyte chamber e.g. through sparger (78), Fig. 3 (not shown), electrical current is passed to generate chlorine on the anode and hydrogen on the cathode, the chlorine is collected as a gas pad 41 at superatmospheric pressure above the anolyte in the anolyte chamber and withdrawn therefrom via line 43 to a liquid-containing tank 51 where it is discharged into the liquid 53 therein while maintaining the liquid level 55 above the anolyte level sufficient to augment the flow of anolyte through the barrier against the hydrogen pressure to the catholyte chamber. Preferably the chlorine is discharged into the tank 51 upwardly via conduit 58 into a bubble cap 59, and recovered via pipe 54. The liquid level 55 may be regulated by movable pipe 60 to vary the pressure of chlorine in the tank 51. Excess brine may be fed and excess anolyte recovered (with the evolved chlorine), resaturated with brine and recycled. The barrier 11 may be cation permeable and provided by chrysotile asbestos diaphragm deposited on to the upper surface of the cathode from a slurry, or as paper or cloth. The asbestos diaphragm may be treated with a resin having fluorocarbon. The electrodes may be formed by bi-polar units (61, Fig. 3), each with cathode 33 and anode 23 joined by conductive studs or spring clips (68). The cathode may be in the form of Fe, Co, Ni or steel (expanded) mesh, rods or perforated plate; the anode may be of valve metal (Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta or W) preferably coated with a Pt group metal or alloy oxide or compound thereof, e.g. alkaline earth metal ruthenate/ite or rhodate/ite, Co palladite or platinate or Ru titanate/ite, or mixed oxides such as Ru02 or RhO 2 and TiO 2 or ZrO 2 with or without Sn or Pb oxide, Bi, Sb or As. A horizontal mercury cathode cell, with diaphragm, Fig. 4 (not shown) and inclined catholyte chamber bottom, may be used.
