Abstract

1429225 Strut-type suspensions ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO Ltd 9 May 1974 [10 May 1973] 22261/73 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] In a strut-type suspension assembly comprising a telescopic hydraulic damper to the outer tube 10 of which is rigidly attached a wheel mounting 14 carrying a stub axle 10, the tube 10 extends as a clearance fit into a bore 12 in the mounting 14 and is secured by an adhesive which fills the clearance between the tube and the mounting. Additional axial location of the tube 10 relative to the mounting 14 is provided by forming the tube with a shoulder 20 for abutment with the mounting, or by making the bore 12 in the mounting 14 blind or partially blind. The adhesive may be a synthetic anaerobic resin. The axial length of the adhesive joint is preferably equal to or greater than the diameter of the joint, and the diametral clearance is preferably from 2 to 10 thousandths of an inch. The mounting 14 may be split by a slot along the bore 12 so that the mounting can be contracted around the tube 10 to obtain the required clearance and retained in its contracted conditions by welding across the slot. The tube 10 may carry a spring seat for a coil suspension spring.
