1462351 Latching device E B C VALENTIM 8 Feb 1974 [8 Nov 1972] 51578/72 Heading E2A A latching device has a plate 1, Figs. 1 and 3 with grooves and projections 2 of dovetail form, slidably mounted on a plate 3, Figs. 4 and 6, having complementary grooves and projections 2. The plate 1, Fig. 1, is provided with teeth 4 and recesses 6 for engagement with complementary recesses 8, Fig. 7, and teeth 10 of a striker plate 5. Springs (not shown) are positioned between the plates 1 and 3 and are located by pegs 18, Fig. 1, in the plate 1, the springs biasing the plate 1 towards the latching position. The striker plate 5 has a lead-in portion 12, Fig. 7, for initial engagement with a shoulder 14, Fig. 1, of the plate 1. A stop 20 is provided to ensure the correct alignment of the teeth 4 and 10 of the plates 1 and 5 respectively, the height of the teeth 10 being lower than the height of the lead-in position 12 to prevent premature engagement of said teeth. The plate 1, Fig. 1, has handles 22, 22 by which it can be moved along the plate 3, each handle 22 having a recess therein to accommodate a lock 26, Fig. 12, or a screw 28, Fig. 13. The latter has a knob 30 for screwing a stem 31 into and out of the recess so that a peg 34 enters or withdraws from a recess 36 in the plate 3 thus locking or unlocking the plates 1 and 3. The lock 26, Fig. 12, has a portion 38, a stem 40 which screws into the recess, the portion 38 being located by a pin 42 so that it cannot rotate, and a barrel 44 having an eccentrically-mounted pin 46 at one end thereof. A locking lever 50, Figs. 9 and 10, has a rod 54 pivotally mounted in a groove 56, Fig. 3, in the plate 1 and, when in the locking position, has pegs 60 received in slots 62, Fig. 5, in the plate 3. Unlocking is effected when the barrel 44, Fig. 12, is rotated by a key, the pin 46 engaging a portion 64, Figs. 9 and 10, of the lever 50 to move the latter so that the pegs 60 leave the slots 62. The plate 3, Fig. 14, is mounted on a door and the plate 5, which may have a peg (not shown), is mounted on a door-frame.
