Abstract

1461664 Refuse compactors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 25 June 1974 [26 April 1974] 28134/74 Heading B8C A compactor comprises a frame 14, a pressure plate 54 movable into and out of a container 52 by means of a screw 56, and means 58 bearing between the frame 14 and plate 54 independently of the screw 56 to maintain the orientation of the plate during compression of refuse in the container. The means 58 comprise scissor links 128, 130 the ends of which carry wheels 150, 152, 178, 180 running in tracks in the plate 54, and in a structure 140 connected to the frame. The scissor link 128 comprises plates on either side of the screw and connected together at the ends by cross members 146, 148. The other link 130 is of box construction, has a central aperture for the screw 56, and is pivoted to the other link by pins 132. The screw is threaded in a sleeve 76 carried in a universal bearing in a collar 84 rotated by an electric motor. The bottom of the screw is connected by a ball and cap bearing to the plate. The compactor may be located beneath a sink with the screw when retracted extending into a housing on top of the frame 14.
