Abstract
1459882 Sandwich injection moulding SOC INTERNAZIONALE PER LO SFRUTTAMENTO DI BREVETTI SA 19 Sept 1974 [19 Sept 1973 20 Feb 1974 29 April 1974] 40822/74 Heading B5A A sandwich moulding process comprises injecting core and skin materials simultaneously into a mould cavity through concentric injection nozzles 5, 8 the core material having a bubbleformer incorporated therein which produces microscopic bubbles 16 within the mould cavity. Plasticizers 1, 2 and injectors 3, 4 are provided for each of the materials, and the injectors 3, 4 are controlled by regulators 10, 11. The bubble former may be a granular material e.g. wood shavings with absorbed water or water and/or steam introduced into the core material. The inner nozzle 8 may be movable to vary the depth of penetration into the mould cavity. Micropores may also be produced in the core material be means of a chemical agent or by a compressed gas or steam introduced through a further nozzle within the nozzle 8. Tools 14a, 14b (Fig. 2) are used to squeeze the skin material together at the beginning and end of the injection moulding operation. The bubble former may be introduced into the core material by passing the bubble former through pipes 9a to perforations 9d in a plate 9e of an apparatus 9, whereupon the bubble former moves with the core material flowing in direction 9c through the plates 9e.
