Abstract

1459271 Spot-type disc brakes for steerable driven wheels SOC ANON AUTOMOBILES CITROEN 7 March 1974 [7 March 1973] 10326/74 Heading F2E A vehicle wheel and brake assembly includes a brake disc 7 having a single, inwardly facing, friction surface 7a. As shown, the assembly comprises a wheel support 1 pivoted by means of two knuckle joints 3a, 3b respectively on arms 2a, 2b, rigid with the structure of a motor vehicle. A hub 11b driven by element 11a rigid with a transmission shaft 4, is rotatably mounted in the wheel support 1, and has secured to it by bolts 13 under tension a radially-extending plate 12 on whose inward side is secured brake disc 7 and on whose outward side is secured an annular member 6a which forms with rim 6 a wheel whose opening is directed inwards. Relative rotation between plate 12 and disc 7 is further prevented by engagement of bolt heads in certain disc grooves 16. Two brake pads 21a, 21b, Fig. 6, are applied by pistons 19a, 19b respectively in cylinders fed at 20, Fig. 1. A mechanical emergency brake 9, Fig. 1, is applied by a cable and scissor-levers (Fig. 8, not shown). The disc may be integral with the plate, (Fig. 4, not shown) and ventilating openings provided for centrifugal cooling; co-operating orifices in annular member 6a are provided. In Fig. 5 (not shown) where the disc and plate are separate, oblique openings in the plate communicate with the disc grooves shown in Fig. 2 at 16. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the central transverse part of plate 12 is omitted and hub 11b is extended outwards and has a radially extending shoulder between which and the hub bearing the axial part of plate 12 is fixedly located. In all cases the plate 12 has radial ribs, and these, together with the bolts 13, Fig. 1, or equivalent bolts, or the Fig. 3 arrangement, are sufficiently strong to resist the axial force generated by braking on face 7a. The hub and plate may be integral.
