1424192 Internal drum brakes; bearings AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 9 Feb 1973 [6 March 1972] 10343/72 Headings F2E and F2A The back plate 17 of an internal shoe drum brake 18 has a central aperture 20 which defines a plurality (two or four) of inwardly projecting circumferentially spaced lugs 21 which engage (optionally via a spacer) the outer end of the radially outer race 13 of a ball bearing assembly 12 for a wheel axle shaft 16 to prevent axial movement of the race 13 from a hole 14 in a fixed casing 10; the diameter of the remainder of the central aperture 20 other than that defining the lugs 21 is substantially equal to the outside diameter of the race 13 to locate the back plate 17 radially. The four lugs 21 of Figs. 1-3, are joggled so that their radially inner portions do not lie in the same plane as the remainder of the radial inner peripheral portion of the back plate 17. The inner race 15 of assembly 12 is fixed to the shaft 16 and at its outer frusto-conical end 24 the shaft 16 carries a casting 25 which is bolted to the drum 27 of brake 18 and to a wheel body portion 28. A thin metal plate 22 serves as a shield to deflect dirt away from the bearing assembly 12 and four bolts 19 and nuts 23 secure the casing 10, the back plate 17 and the plate 22 together. The invention is said to be applicable to any wheel of a motor vehicle, for example a power driven independently suspended wheel. A spacer may be trapped between the back plate and the radially outer race of the bearing assembly and such a spacer may carry an oil seal.
