Abstract

1457211 Wells &c PERRY R BASS INC and SID W RICHARDSON FOUNDATION 7 Jan 1975 [28 Jan 1974] 678/75 Heading E1F Apparatus for placing a flow control device, eg valve 24, in, or removing a flow control device from, a well mandrel 12 having a plurality, (e.g. two), of side by side flow control device receiving pockets (not shown) includes a support body 70, an orientation key 82 for engagement with an orientation slot 62 formed in a sleeve 60 fixed in the mandrel 12, a shifting arm 72 pivotally supported from the body 70 and a flow control device handling support 74 including a plurality of connections positioned side by side for supporting flow control devices 24, the connections being spaced for alignment with the plurality of receiving pockets. As described the connections on the support 74 consist of threaded holes 110, 112, 114 (Fig. 6) for supporting flow control device running and pulling tools. Holes 110, 114 are used for installing or removing a pair of valves 24 (Fig. 2) simultaneously in or from a mandrel 12 having a pair of valve pockets, and hole 112 can be used for installing or removing a valve 24 from a conventional single pocket mandrel (not shown). The valves 24 are aligned with the pockets in the mandrel 12 by raising the apparatus so that key 82 engages an inclined guide surface 63 on the sleeve 60 and is guided into the orientation slot 62 until key 82 engages a stop shoulder 64. The key 82 is pivoted to a body member 79 which, together with part 81, is movable relative to the body 70. Further upward movement of the body 70 thus causes shoulder 96 on the part 81 to be moved out of engagement with a pin 98 on the shifting arm 72 thus permitting a spring 100 to swing the arm 72 so that the valves are positioned directly above the pockets in the mandrel. The apparatus is removed from the mandrel by jarring upwardly to shear pin 105 and thus allow the key 82 to be retracted by a shoulder 110 on the body 70 engaging inclined surface 92 of key 82.
