Abstract

1456983 Moulding skinned foams STOREY BROS & CO Ltd 30 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 4932/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division A4] A method of making a resilient padded item comprises sucking a cast polyurethane film of 10-250Á thickness down into a female mould to form a cover in the shape of the padded item and forming a resilient foam in situ within the cover so that upon removal from the mould the foam holds the cover in the shape of the padded item. The film may be prepared by spreading a solution of the polyurethane in a volatile solvent on a plain or embossed surface. The film may have an extensible fabric e.g. loop raised knitted nylon fabric, or crimped or coiled fibres bonded to its resulting inner or outer surface and may have a layer of polyurethane foam 1/32-# inch thick bonded to its inner surface. The film may be softened by heat prior to shaping. The resilient foam may be formed from liquid polyurethane precursors to give an open cell foam either directly or by pounding the partially cured foam. The item may comprise cushioning for car or general furniture.
