Abstract

1455855 Making exhaust system catalytic devices BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 20 Feb 1974 [7 April 1973] 16792/73 Heading B3A Apparatus for fabricating a catalytic device for an i.e. engine exhaust system comprises a frame, a pair of jaws 11, 12, mounted on the frame and adapted for parallel displacement, a flexible clamp band 10 secured at either end to the clamp jaws, the band serving to compress a sheet 24 of casing material around the catalytic device or catalyst support member 22, and means to secure the sheet while under compression. The member 22 is provided with a thermal insulating layer 23 of knitted wire mesh and the sheet 24, which is of stainless steel, has its edges overlapped. The jaw 11 is rigidly fixed to the frame and the jaw 12 is driven towards it by an hydraulic ram to compress the sheet. When under compression, a tack welder is run along the space between the jaws and after the jaws have been opened a continuous finishing weld is applied along the length of the tack welds. Alternatively the continuous weld may be applied while the sheet 24 is compressed so dispensing with the tack welding stop.
