Abstract

1455403 Continuous casting KAISER ALUMINUM and CHEMICAL CORP 19 April 1974 17366/74 Heading B3F An open-ended mould 10 (which may be horizontal and of Al or Cu) is positioned in a mould assembly by a spacer 19 in a coolant baffle 18 which is located in and may be integral with a jacket member 13, a part 15 of which, surrounding the mould 10, is urged into sealing engagement, e.g. with intervening 0-ring 32, with a flange 11 extending from the mould, there being conduits through the ridge 19 for passage of coolant from the space between the baffle 18 and the mould 10 on to the emerging casting (of Al). The spacer 19 is shown as a ridge integral with the baffle 18 but may be a separate member or integral with the mould 10. The mould may be square, rectangular or circular. The material of the 0-ring 32 has a durometer hardness of 25-80 and the mould flange 11 and coolant jacket 13 are urged together by quick-release fasteners 33, 34 and a clamping ring 35 to give less than 500 lbs. pressure between the flange and jacket. The ring 35 could be omitted and the elements 34 fixed to the mould flange 11. In the case of the horizontal mould, Fig. 6 (not shown), the mould flange and jacket are urged together by a screw and a ring (35). A shoulder on the ring (35) engages an orifice plate (80) through which the molten metal passes into the mould. Through a porous gasket (77) between the ring, plate and the mould flange, lubricant may be fed; alternatively, there may be gaps for the feed. The mould 10 may be replaced by one of different size. In which case, the baffle 18 is also replaced. In Fig. 2, to accommodate a mould 10 of smaller diameter, the baffle 18 has a surrounding flange. For a shorter mould, the ridge 19 is at the top of the baffle. Lubricant is fed to a groove 42 at the top of the mould by conduits 40, 41 in the jacket wall 15 and mould flange 11. The metal may be fed to the top of a vertical mould by way of a trough, Fig. 5 (not shown) and reservoir top of asbestos-silica composition made up of rings.
