Abstract

1454569 Seaming UNITED GLASS Ltd 13 May 1975 [16 April 1974] 16502/74 Heading B5K [Also in Divisions B2 and B8] To seal a glass or ceramic container using a sealing membrane coated with thermoplastic material, the mouth of the container is provided with a coating of a cured thermosetting resin, then the membrane is applied to the mouth and heated to plasticize the thermoplastic material to cause the membrane to adhere to the mouth. The method is said to provide a good seal for aqueous products in glass jars, and the membrane used is preferably a metal, e.g. aluminium, foil which is heated by an induced R.F. current. The thermosetting resin may be applied to the container mouth by spraying, dipping or roller coating, and is preferably applied during manufacture of the container when the temperature of the container is no greater than 150‹ C. Alternatively it may be applied after manufacture of the container. The sealing membrane may be supplemented by an auxiliary closure cap.
