Abstract

1453598 IC engine exhaust systems OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 22 Nov 1973 [13 Dec 1972] 54263/73 Heading F1B An I.C. engine comprises a combustion chamber with an exhaust port 13 which communicates with an exhaust gas discharge system 17 having means to introduce air to the combustion chamber via the port 13 by generating a negative pressure wave in the system 17 to draw air into the system via port 27 and supplying that air to the port 13 by means of a positive pressure wave. One or more reed valves 31 covering ports 27, (57) Fig. 2 (not shown) open to admit atmospheric air to duct 19 when the gas-pressure therein is below atmospheric, the air then being caused to flow to the port 13 by a reflected positive pressure wave from end-wall 35 or by a compressive wave arising from the opening of the exhaust port of another cylinder.
